The piece
A polonaise in A-flat major written in the shadow of Chopin’s “Heroic” Polonaise, op. 53: the same key, the same proud rhythm, and the same wish to sound larger than one piano. It opens with a rising introduction before the theme arrives, stated and answered in full chords.
Its shape
A lyrical episode interrupts the march, then a passage in octaves builds towards the climax. The theme comes back as a memory before its last, full return. 131 bars in all.
