The piece
A classic rag, written in the school of Scott Joplin: a strongly syncopated right hand over a square, march-like left hand, with the tension living in the rub between the two. Everything is written out, and the rhythm is straight, not swung.
Its shape
Sectional strains in G major, with a trio that moves to C. As Joplin wrote on his own scores, it is never right to play ragtime fast.
